I've been all over the place the past 60 days; something like 16 flights. Shit, I’m writing this on a flight back to Seattle. But it was the 2011 WFTDA Western Regional Tournament in Portland, OR, hosted by the Rose City Rollers, that kicked it all off; and I drove there with Tootie Tinwhistle, Curtis E Lay and Chris Shooter.
I like surprises. I especially like surprises that turn out really well…
Rolling into a normal Rat City Wednesday scrimmage practice I saw an unfamiliar face hanging out with a few of our spectacular NSOs, The Lightening Fists of Science. I didn't really think much of it and went to stretch and get geared up for practice.
It's Friday night and I just sent some comps of web banners over to Jules Doyle for his new book, No Mercy: Life on the Roller Derby Track. I've gotten to look through the book (digitally) and Jules threw me a bunch of images for these banners. The overall collection of photos and the compositions in the book are hella impressive. I'm sure anyone reading this knows how phenomenal a photographer Axle Adams is but seeing so many of his images together may cause your retinas to orgasm.
Welcome to RAWK City. That's about as much of an introduction as you're going to get so I hope it's sufficient. This isn't a beginning; I've been involved in women's roller derby since 2005. I don't have time to catch you up and I can't even figure out where to start this column… So I guess there's no time like the present.
