How to Stay in the Game When Your Team is Down

by Sweetart

You’re in the last 15 minutes of the bout and your team is down in points. How do you react?

Do you give up?

Do you decide that your team has lost when the game isn’t over yet?

Are you imagining how refreshing that beer will be at the afterparty?

If so, those thoughts can actually cause you to lose. Your thoughts can manifest into reality. Every skater makes a decision when they see that we are down and it is getting close to the end of the game.

Five Stages of Grief and the Third Year Beginner

By Kate Thulu I know a little something about derby setbacks. Over the past eight weeks, I’ve felt like a cartoon. You know the one--a person tumbles head over heels down a mountain and just when they think they reached the bottom they start tumbling again. I bombed travel team tryouts. Ouch. I didn’t get picked up in home team draft. OUCH. Then, in the most painful tumble of all, I missed passing my WFTDA minimum skills 25 in 5 lap test by 8 seconds.

I was reminded by various people that...

Food is my Monica Bellucci: On the Road to My Ideal Derby Weight

It's 4:27am and I am trolling the interwebs for pictures of food I cannot eat. I literally just kissed an image of a succulent dark chocolate cake that was on my monitor. How do you spell Derbyversary anyway?

by: Margie Ram

On March 31st, it is my derbyversary. One year to the day when I got off my couch and said no more to being depressed and sedentary. What I have found is a sport I love that combines athleticism and modern femininity that is both frilly and raunchy. It is just plain awesome. Not only do I get to tango with my own personal demons and skate through the physical and mental pain, I have developed strong feelings for my derby girls.

Call to Action: Send Team USA to the White House

Team USA representatives recently got in touch with us to let us know about an incredible initiative they're launching. They want to send Team USA to the White House to be honored for their great achievement on the world stage. We wanted to share this with you, and ask that you share it with everyone you know who loves roller derby and wants to see it gain the legitimacy it deserves.

Derby Love

My friend Megan excitedly called me and said, “Rocky Mountain Rollergirls are starting a juniors team! Sophia is going to join and your girls should do it too.”

“Really? Hmmm. I don’t know. Lili is so petite and Elisabeth has never skated.”

“They’ll teach them how. It will be fun. Come on, just come to the first meeting.”

And with that, my world shifted gears and became derby focused.
