This post is taking us down to Greenville, South Carolina; home of the Greenville Derby Dames!! A high-five of respect to my Southern sisters, because I kind of am one now. (Even though I'm technically a Northerner, I've been adopted into the club because I can say "y'all" without thinking about it.) I have so much respect for Hex Kitten who was a derby pioneer in her town! So much love you to girls who have worked so hard at building the leagues up to where they are today.
Meow Mix Yo’ Face Up is a lifetime competitive Jam Skater, Jammer for the Jacksonville Rollergirls travel team, owner of Vanilla Derby, as well as coach of the men’s derby team the Magic City Misfits and Jacksonville’s JR derby team.
Where are you from?
I am from Port Washington, Wisconsin. Its a small town just outside of Milwaukee.
Just to re-cap... I've sent out some random derby and non-derby interview questions to various skaters in leagues around the globe. Our sport is comprised of some of the most diverse and fascinating individuals and my goal is to show them some lovin', pry into their lives a bit, and bring this growing derby world a little closer together. Continuing on...
I've come up with a list of 25 questions and initially sent it out to a small group of skater friends and acquaintances from several different leagues around the globe. Then I've asked these skaters to refer me to some of their skater friends and acquaintances so we can get a wide variety going. The goal here is to make the growing derby world feel a little more intimate and to give props to various not-as-well-known skaters who've worked hard to make derby what it is today. Also, it's fun to read random interviews! So I hope you enjoy it...
The derby community was shocked and saddened to hear about the accidental death of Toni Torres, a skater for the River City Dames of Anarchy, during a speed skating event on New Year's Eve. There has been an outpouring of support and condolences on the River City Dames of Anarchy Facebook Page. We wish the Dames and Torres' family much strength as they deal with this terrible tragedy.
No Coast Roller Derby superfan Sgt. Rick Carter, flight engineer, wanted to trick out a new CH-47 D Model Chinook helicopter with stickers and flair to show his derbylove for his homegirls. Then he decided to give it a derby inspired name to represent his home league in Lincoln, NE, and paint the name on the helicopter's ramp.
