Meet Team USA: Little A
Name: Little A
League Affiliation: Tampa Bay Derby Darlins
Years Skating: I started derby in 2008, but I practically had skates on my feet when I was born.
DL: What was your previous athletic background, if any?
LA: I started soccer when I was 4 and travel roller hockey when I was 8, and I did both of those well into high school. I did some speed skating for short period in the middle of it all, and I also did some of those school sports like basketball and track, but hockey and soccer were my passions. I'd still be doing them today if I wasn't so in consumed and in love with derby.
DL: Why did you want to be on Team USA?
LA: I'm a very competitive person. I want to be the best at everything that I do, and derby is no different. I jumped at the opportunity when I heard about the Team USA tryouts because this really is like our Olympics. I mean, it's an historical event—how could you NOT want to be on Team USA?
DL: How did you feel when you found out you had made it?
LA: Completely honored! I was sitting down and literally sprung into the air when I heard my name on the roster. It didn't feel real.
DL: Which skater inspires you most, and why?
LA: I can't pick just one. My team (Tampa Tantrums) inspires me because they all have this amazing drive and passion for the sport. I've learned so much from them, and I feel like we're improving at an incredible rate. I'm so grateful to skate with the girls that I do.
DL: Do you have any advice for skaters just starting out?
LA: Derby is physically and mentally challenging—if you don't think it is, you're not pushing yourself hard enough. It will take over your life if you're willing to let it, and there's nothing wrong with that. Fall in love with the sport and immerse yourself in it, but work hard to keep your head on straight. It's up to you to make sure that derby is a positive part of your life.
