Years Skating

I have been skating for 20 years and 5 of them have been roller derby. It's sort of in my blood.

DL: What was your previous athletic background, if any?
TL:
I didn't play any sports growing up other than skating. I started speed skating when I was 8 and started playing hockey at 9.

DL: Why did you want to be on Team USA?
TL:
I was on the US team for hockey, and I always want to go as far as I can in whatever I do. And I thought this would be a great chance to skate with some amazing people I have never skated with before.

DL: How did you feel when you found out you had made it?
TL:
I was actually at work at the fire station when I found out. I don't get great Phone service out there and when I finally got it, my phone started blowing up with Facebook and text messages. It was a great feeling knowing that I made it. You never know how selection processes go.

DL: Which skater inspires you most, and why?
TL:
There are so many skaters who inspire me. Sassy because she has been a rock, not only in derby but my life. Intended Anger for never giving up, and pushing through life. And teaching me the same. Wheel Her and Heffer for being old rink rat friends and being there to push along with me for all the good and bad times. Atomatrix for pushing me when I get lazy. And knowing when it's time it's time.

DL: Do you have any advice for skaters just starting out?
TL:
No matter what you do, don't give up. You have good days and bad days; don't let those bad days affect the good ones. You will hit a point where you want to give up, and I promise you, it will get better. Set a goal that is realistic; when you reach it, set a new one.

Comments

Tannibal, love the advice for new skaters. Been skating since June and it's totally true! Will remember your motto when I'm having a particularly difficult and shitty practice. Thanks!
