Skater loses leg to infection

Sheila Hurt-U of Chilliwack’s Voodoo Derby Dollz has suffered devastating consequences from a streptococcal infection. The Abbotsford Times has shared the story:

"On Nov. 17 Julie Barr, an Abbotsford mother of two who skates with Chilliwack’s Voodoo Derby Dollz, contracted an aggressive group A streptococcal infection that forced her onto life support for two weeks just before Christmas.

As part of her life-and-death brush with the deadly bacteria she was given medication that caused her extremities to lose circulation, and just before Christmas doctors were forced to amputate her left leg mid-calf.

She now faces the loss of toes from her right foot as well as parts of her fingers and has had to undergo kidney dialysis.

To help out their fallen sister, the Voodoo Derby Dollz will host a fundraising scrimmage for Barr, a.k.a. Sheila Hurt-U, at the Ag-Rec Center in Abbotsford this Saturday (Jan. 19)."
