What's in a name? A derby girl by any other name would smell as gross
Do you ever think about what you’d call yourself if you could pick your derby name over? I think about it all the time. I like my name fine, but the names I come up with these days are so much better now that I’m older and wiser and, presumably, funnier.
Back in 2009, before I had even attended a single practice, I decided my name would be Atticus Flinch. I was an English major, and have a sweet little cousin named Atticus, so it just plain made sense. However, the guy I was seeing at the time said it was terrible, and talked me out of using it. I still regret it to this day. TwoEvils tells me that someone has since claimed it, too. I HOPE YOU’RE ENJOYING MY GLORY, FLINCH.
So, my first bout rolls around and I still haven’t picked a name. Oh god, what do I call myself? My uncle tells me I should be Nikkee Knee-breaker. Furious eye-rolling ensues. I frantically trawl through my iTunes library looking for anything that vaguely resembles a name. The only thing that comes close is this awful hip hop song by Snob Scrilla that I inexplicably liked at the time. And so I was Heartbreak Scorsese, as my very first, hot pink jersey sadly commemorates.
UGH. No one knew what it meant. People didn’t understand me when I told them who I was (although that could have been my thick Australian accent – this was back when I lived in the US)
At the end of that season I decide I can’t go on living with the shame of being Heartbreak Scorsese. I need to change it. Aaron, self-proclaimed Expert Namer and the husband of my derby wife decides he should step in.
He approaches me and tells me he has thought of the best, most perfect name possible for me, and how has no one registered it yet, and it’s a sign that I am meant to use it. I tell him that’s the worst name I’ve ever heard and flat out refuse. He starts a facebook petition demanding I change my name to Blockodile Dundee, and people I know join it en masse.
I still thought it was horrendous, but people got really excited, so I reluctantly got on board. Aaron now works as a marketing manager, and I can only assume he landed that job because of the Blockodile thing.
These days, I think of the best derby names all the time and wish that I could use them all (Like the fictional Jingleboobs McHitsalot I once wrote about. Except that’s actually terrible and I’d never use it. You can feel free to, though!).
If I started playing derby now, I think I’d go with one of the following:
Bedonka Truck
The Jet, as in Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez. I will never not have a crush on that guy.
Bellatrix LeStrangle
Destroy McClure (“Hi. I’m Destroy McClure. You may remember me from such ass-kickings as the one I’m about to give you.”)
Lucy S. Malfoy
Blunderbuss
Zaphod Beebleblox
What awesome derby names have you thought of since you started playing? Do you have a derby name yet? Do you even want one? You can feel free to use one of mine, but you will be required to pay me 45 cents every time an announcer says your name.

My first was Rock Island Line
My first was Rock Island Line. Same. nobody got it. The amount of times I had to sing the chorus "rock island line, it's a mighty good road. Rock island line, it's the road to ride..."
My first name was...
Imelda Snarkos (used in rec league). I quickly grew tired trying to explain to people.
My first is my current
I've always been Rosie the Retaliator- yes, there are 100s of Rosies, but my grandma actually was a Rosie and worked on planes during World War 2.
In the meantime, I wish I could find someone who would become Brick Housewife. I just think it's funny and comes with a theme song and tagline pre-made.
Some people have said they think it would make the owner sound subservient to her husband. I guess since I'm definitely NOT in that position it never occurred to me. I think it's sassy.
Still Have The Same Name As When I Started
I came up with my name (Razor De Rockefeller) in high school as almost an second identity for my artistic pursuits. I never really thought twice about just using that name for derby as well. Though most people don't get it cause it isn't funny or a pun or a play on words, just a cool name I came up with lol. Though now I do look back and I am always thinking of awesome derby names I could have gone with. I don't think I would ever change it (but I guess I should never say never) but I feel like I have had the name too long, and built up too much recognition with it that there is no going back! Though I do write down the real winners I come up with now, I'll have to find where I saved them on my computer lol!
This reminds me of an earlier column

I've always been Bones, but...
Lonesome Shove... if you like Westerns. That one's not taken either!
It's too late for me
I had been around derby for a couple of years before I started announcing. Since my better half is official Penny Whistler, people were already referring to me as Mr Whistler anyway, and since I had the T Shirts already, stuck with it. But there was a brief period where I considered using Guided By Vices - combining my love of, well, vices, and my favorite band, Guided By Voices. But sure enough, an enterprising skater had already scooped it, so Mr Whistler I stayed.
But any of you are welcome to use Curtis E. Flush, the result of some afterparty brainstorming.
Glad I got out of that one....
I started out with GI Jen... As I used to have a shaved head and my name was Jennifer...
Even though I had absolutely nothing with the militarily.
Luckily I changed it in time, so nobody actually remembers that name. :p
Trippin' the rif
Derby names always make me smile. I chose mine after a two week debate with my inner skater and tried such ones as 'Roberto Guerrera' , 'Rob'N Dishood', and decided on Trip Ur'Mama because my friends were callin me Trip for awhile after finding out that i was the third generation of Robert's in my family. Plus it rolled off the tongue nicely :P
My team wanted to call me the 'Ticket Master' during drills the girls always yelled out ticket, knees, toes, in order to keep in proper derby form. And one of them for some reason used to like to stare at my moobies, and told me they looked like pastries...needless to say, her and i came up with the "Pastry Ref" and if i ever have to change my name...i'm going with that one.
I still wish on occasion that
I still wish on occasion that I had gone with the first name I had wanted, Shreddinger's Cat. But nobody got it, then I would explain it and they would be horrified. Looking back that's part of what made it great. Plus it's a bit more me, cause I love cats more than computers
I get it! I appreciate your
I get it! I appreciate your wit!
I am not clever
I'm not clever enough to come up with a suitable derby name and I've never had a nickname that I could fall back on. I'm just not good with pseudonyms and/or handles. I'm currently using something rather crass for my Ref name, but I think I'll just start putting my real last name on my jerseys. It's easy to remember, I don't have to explain it to anybody, it's who I am, and it means something funny in German slang.
Too Late
It took me forever to come up with a derby name when I started skating 2 years ago. When I was first thinking of names I really REALLY wanted a name that included my real first name, Greta. After much thought and several disappointing trips to twoevils I ended up settling on Pandora's Squeezebox. I didn't love it at first but now I've sort of developed a special person around my derby name and there are so many jokes related to it with my team mates. I had come to adore my derby name. That is until just a few weeks ago when my boyfriend finally came up with the perfect, not taken derby name that makes use of my real name and I'm seriously considering changing it. Person Non Greta. What do you think?
Persona Non Greta...
That is awesome! But then what do people call you for short, "Greta" or something else? Is it easier or just weird to be called by your given name at derby? Folks will get used to it no matter what. Love the new name! Never too late!!
Persona Non Greta is really
Persona Non Greta is really clever; I like it a lot. It's never too late! Especially since your name is actually Greta, it's not like it's a huge departure.
Hey, that's me!

Haha! I approve of your name
Haha! I approve of your name and your expert naming skillz. I never checked to see if anyone had any of these names; lucky I didn't try to use one of them!
Bellatrix!
Bellatrix LeStrangle was a name I thought of when I had to re-choose a derby name after my first one (Lindsay LoHammer) was too similar to someone else's, but as I saw it was taken as well, I decided to be Sirius Block. And I salute my other HP fan derby girls <3

So glad I changed my name
When I first became scrimmage-eligible, I rushed myself into picking a name so I could put in on my shirt before my first scrimmage. (I didn't realize I only had to have a number and no one would care if I waited on the name.) I got permission from the friend who owns the copyright to a name I was excited about, and skated as Choo-Choo Bear for about 8 months. But it's really cutesy, and I got tired of explaining the reference, and I started getting mixed up with another player in our league, because the nicknames "Choo" and "Chew" sound the same.
So I changed it to Criminal Wrecker. I think it was the second name I ever came up with (the first was Sandra Bollocks), and even with an ever-growing list of awesome ideas, it's still my favorite. I tell people my name and they laugh immediately. I felt guilty changing away from CCB because my friend was so excited that I was using it, but I make the right decision for me. I lurve my name now.
Name change
My derby name is Roadside BombShel. I have thought about removing the 'BombShel' from the end.
There tons of 'bombs' and 'bombshells' in derby, so it's a little pedestrian. Plus I never really feel comfortable when people call me 'bombshell' for short. In my league people call me "Roadside" which is my preference and totally cool - it's my name.
However, the name Roadside on it's own makes no sense at all. A 'roadside bomb' is a thing. A bombshell is a thing and can describe a person. Roadside on it's own is not a thing. This is my dilemma!
oh twoevils...
When I first started skating, I had no other nickname to fall back on other than 'GlitterTits' an unfortunate nickname I had earned after years of bellydancing. My league had a problem with it and finally told me to change it, and at the time I was miffed that they could be such prudes and have such an issue with 'TITS' since we all have them, but in the end I guess I'm thankful that they had common sense when I obviously did not. Of course depression over actually having to spend time and effort into picking a name set in, as all the ones I picked were taken by skaters clear across the globe...but all that quickly dissipated when it suddenly struck me that I realized that I had been called another name too over the years, both as an insult and as a compliment, and thus 'Wicked Blonde' was born. Sure, it makes a lot more sense back east, and I get a lot of laughs from it, but since moving out west for 6 months and skating with a league out there, it's obvious that no one gets it. But that's ok with me, since it still works, it just has totally different meaning out here!
Had to earn it
My original name just never really sunk in....it was clever but I had to explain it to ppl and it was just a mouthful, ParkHer 'n Pieces (favorite candy is...you guessed it). One day a lovely fellow skater told me I was a train wreck and alas my new not-so-alter ego was born - Train Wreck Aly. Turns out my husband thinks it's fitting as hell and it has even managed to creep over into the real world. Lesson learned - sometimes you have to just sit back and wait to earn your name from those who know you best :)
Whoosh.
"ParkHer 'n Pieces (favorite candy is...you guessed it)"
I didn't guess it, can you please help? The only candy I can think of that has "Pieces" in the name is Reese's Pieces.
I think there are a lot of derby names that reference a specific TV show or artist (or in this case, candy) that are always just going to bounce off of people because they aren't the right age, or didn't grow up in the right part of the country, etc.
Example: Pioneer Valley (who I announce for) has a very talented player who took the name Legend of the Hit n' Trample, which is a reference to a show called Legend of the Hidden Temple. Everyone on the team thinks this name is hilarious but since the show was never on my radar, it just bounces off me. In fact, sometimes they have to remind me about what the name references.
This could also just be because I'm old. (Old enough to have seen E.T. in the theaters, the first time around, when Reese's Pieces were new.)
Yup
Reese's Pieces would be correct! Sorry :)
Now I really don't get it.
There's no rhyme between "Parker" and "Pieces," there's a "'n" instead of a "'s." Am I still missing something?
If you did experiments involving monkeys you could be "Rhesus Pieces."
2 Weeks
2 weeks until my first bout ever and I still have no name. HELP!
Nobody gets my name either.
Fun article, Blockodile. (I think I remember Heartbreak Scorsese!) Everything I thought of with any degree of cleverness that actually fit my personality was taken when I started derby (and that was in 2009!). I was so tired of even thinking about it by the time my then-boyfriend suggested my name that I was willing to accept anything decent, and I did recall tables with screeds against animal testing and vivisection at the punk shows I attended as a youth. Vivi Section also kind of sounded like a real name and, most importantly, wasn't taken. But nobody gets it unless you hand them a dictionary — perhaps the only aspect of it that relates to my personality, which would have been better served by a literary reference. My teammate Crash Menagerie, who is a biologist, and I used to joke about switching names. But it's just too late. There's a point at which it seems the name just becomes a part of you and there's no turning back.
Any space nerds out there?
Nail YerAss-Tyson. You're welcome.
oops
Sorry, there shouldn't be a hyphen there. My bad.
All in the Name
Was tough for me to pick a name and helped my husband pick his as well, for now I am NSO my husband is the player I NSO for Derby Dames as well as the Mean Mountain Boys both of VT I'm an NSO for now and wanted a name I would be happy with if I skate or ref one day as well, I'm a butcher by trade and figured I need to be sharp as an NSO, Very happy with the out come :-)
