The really exciting jam timer action has been front-loaded a little; instead of those fun little moments after the pack start, now you have to make that psychic connection to your head ref *before* it starts, in case there needs to be a Delay of Game call.
Getting those right is going to be an art form. I look forward to watching (and helping) it develop.
I love that we live in a Country where attitudes are changing, and we are becoming more Human and less close minded. Congratulations you two, I wish you MANY Decades of happiness.
I love hearing about new leagues developing in new locations!! I would live to come out and skate with you all sometime!! I of course would pack a bag full of bearings and pads!
If you get the opportunity (privilege) to attend a session run by Demanda Riot DO IT! The most valuable experience in my roller derby obsession was to be at Rollercon Down Under last weekend and each and every coach brought something special to each session but Demanda just nailed the level of engagement, intensity, encouragement and pure inspiration. I have learned a lot of the above list in two years of derby but I take away "Always skate like you mean it" and will be using it to remind me to bring the intensity to every session I do. Thank you RCDU for sharing the derby love in Australia and thank you Demanda Riot for inspiring so many of us.

I finally downloaded the pdf of the new WFTDA Rules. A major change that I haven't heard people discussing: The Hot Bald Lady is no longer there. In her place is a new bald person with a decidedly more masculine physique.
While I'm somewhat surprised and disappointed, let us not look past the opportunity to get to know our new friend. To wit:
1. Seems to favor a similar line of apparel as the HBL--capes, long gloves, thigh-high boots, sunhats--but rather than sunburns at nude beaches, this person prefers a John Boehner-style spray-on tan, lending an orange tint to the exposed areas.
2. Still no tattoos; the reason why remains unknown and fascinating (to some...perhaps...?)
3. The booty, in both the back and side views, appears fresh and firm as a Georgia peach (thank you, Tobias Funke), so we need not speculate as much about gluteal musculature as I did above for the HBL. I would also note that this person appears to have been doing their sit-ups.
4. This person definitely has thumbs, but I'm not actually sure about fingers. Those of you old enough to remember "The Land of the Lost" may join me in wondering if this new model has just a little Sleestak DNA.
5. Finally, like the HBL, the new model's Sleestak-y arms are opening to us all in a beckoning, welcoming gesture..."I'm here to help you, sssRRRSSSsrsrrrRRSSSRRrrrr," says the Sleestak Blocking Zone Model. For that, we can all be thankful.
Ill be in thailand for a month and im looking for a league to skate with while im there...any idea if there are some that im just not finding on the web?
Before reading this article I really did think I had a rough go of it trying to find a warehouse for our track. My woes are nothing in comparison to the CaiRollers! You ladies are the epitome of derby spirit and I have complete faith you can rock it. Where there is a derby will there is a way!
Thanks for pointing this out!

OMG, Ian, I hadn't thought of it that way, but you're 100% right! I can't wait to see how that shakes out!
I love you.

Nicely written! This was fun to read...I actually wondered how jam timers would feel about this change. It obviously reduces the role a bit.
Anyway, just wanted to drop a quick compliment on a well-written piece.

Thanks for recognizing the future of the sport! There will be big things to come from junior roller derby in 2013.
Some times, some things in the derbyverse just recharge your derby batteries more than others...
Allahu Akbar! Derby women are mighty!
