Derbylife Photo of the Year 2013 Submissions
Thank you to everyone who has entered! Entries are now closed, and we’ve had in excess of 1,200 entries and will be putting the categories up for voting as soon as possible!
It’s time for the Derbylife / DNN Photo of the Year contest! This year we’re running things a little differently to before, but hopefully it should make everything easier for all concerned.
Photographers: You can submit as many photos as you like to any and all categories — and you have until December 6 to do it. Then we will be opening up voting the following week, with the finalists being announced one category at a time. Voting will be open until December 22 and winners will be announced shortly thereafter.
We have five categories this year, which are detailed below; you can use the links below each description to enter that category. When we come to do the voting, your titles and descriptions will be displayed — be sure to be informative! Try and include who your subject is as well as when and where the photo was taken in the description.
Don’t worry — we won’t display your contact details. Those are just so we can let you know if you’ve been nominated and later if you’ve won.
Please submit photos without logos or watermarks. We will not use your photos for anything else outside of this contest unless you are a finalist or overall winner. If this is the case, Derbylife respectfully requests the ability to use the winning photos on the site and on social media to promote future photography contests — anything else we’ll discuss with you directly after the fact. We promise to credit you, and will use watermarked versions of the image if you prefer.
Photographs should be of good quality, preferably over 1MB and under 2MB.
Prizes: The category winners will receive a prize from our sponsors. Potential prizes include T-shirts, cell phone cases, tote bags, and other derby swag. We’ll get in touch with winners to find out sizes and preferences. One overall Photo of the Year winner will receive a Derbylife.com advertising package worth $250 for the project, product, or league of their choice.
If you have questions about this contest, email [email protected]. If you run into technical difficulties with the submission process, then you can email Lex directly.
Best Individual Action
Sometimes you capture an image that shows one person-jammer, blocker, bench staff, mascot, fan… anyone-perfectly. Think individual brilliance on the track, stare-downs, evils or just intensity; any shot you’ve got that is clearly focused on an individual on or around the track should be submitted here.
Best Pack
It’s a team game, stupid. Co-ordinated packwork is a joy to watch, and a pleasure to see captured. Whether it’s a great wall, a shared look or a perfectly set up big hit, if you’ve got a photo that shows off more than one member of a team on the track, submit it here.
Best Aerial Action
Derby doesn’t just happen on the floor. If you’ve got a shot of a skater leaving the track and taking to the air-of their own volition or not-that you’re proud of from 2013, submit it here.
Best Officiating
This can be any photo that captures the work of roller derby’s fine officials. However you want to interpret this is fine by us as long as its theme is officialdom, feel free to enter it.
Best Spirit of Derby
Hard to define, easy to recognise. Any shots you’ve got that you think capture the essence of the sport we love better than any other should go here. It could be fans losing themselves in the dying seconds of a game, it might be a skater helping a member of the opposing team up off the floor, it may even be team-mates reveling in victory or consoling each other in defeat. You’ll know it when you see it.
